An analysis examining the use of artificial intelligence in UK educational institutions found that merely 2% of learners between the ages of 13 and 18 stated they did not use AI for their studies, while the vast majority said they frequently utilized it.

Negative Effect on Skills

In spite of AI’s prevalence, 62% of the pupils said it has had a negative impact on their skills and growth at school. A quarter of the participants concurred that AI “enables me to obtain answers with minimal personal effort”.

An additional 12% indicated artificial intelligence “hinders my original thought”, while similar numbers stated they were less inclined to address issues or compose originally.

An expert in AI technology remarked that the study was one of the initial to analyze how young people in the UK were integrating artificial intelligence into their learning.

“What strikes me as remarkable is the depth of the responses,” the expert commented. “The fact that 60% of learners express worry that AI promotes imitation over original effort demonstrates a profound grasp of academic objectives and the technology’s advantages and drawbacks.”

The professional further stated: “Young people who are using this technology actually have a pretty sophisticated, quite mature understanding of what the technology does in relation to their schoolwork, which is fascinating because we don’t give young people enough credit when it comes to using technology in an educational space, unaided, in this way.”

The results are consistent with empirical investigations on the utilization of AI in education. A particular study evaluated cognitive signals during essay writing among participants using large language models and found: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”

Almost 50% of the two thousand students polled said they were concerned their fellow students were “secretly using AI” for studies without their educators being able to identify it.

Request for Instruction and Positive Aspects

Numerous students stated that they desired more guidance from teachers for the correct utilization of artificial intelligence and in evaluating whether its output was accurate. A project intended to supporting teachers with artificial intelligence instruction is being introduced.

Merely 31% indicated they didn’t think AI use had a negative influence on any of their abilities. But, the majority of pupils reported using artificial intelligence assisted them gain fresh abilities, including 18% who said it assisted them grasp challenges, and 15% who said it aided them produce “original and superior” thoughts.

Student Perspectives

When asked to elaborate, one 15-year-old girl commented: “I’ve gained a better grasp of math concepts, and the technology aids in resolving challenging queries.”

Meanwhile, a male student aged 14 stated: “My cognitive speed has increased compared to before.”
