Marvel's Wonder Man Trailer Unveils The MCU's Most Self-Referential TV Show Ever

Marvel has heard that viewers could be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to incorporate that very concept into their next superhero show.

Indeed, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer, which debuted on Oct. 10, also subtly moved the Wonder Man release date back from its original late 2025 window into January 2026.

Why another superhero film? Everyone is weary of superhero content. Why watch them in the theater? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reinvent the whole category of storytelling.

The interviewer responds: "Have you given any thought about casting?"

The preview then cuts to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the conversation on his mobile device, and the trailer ends.

Key Details About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the MCU. The show stars Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).

The supporting cast includes Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.

The Studio's Self-Referential Comedy Strategy

We don't know much else about the plot of Wonder Man, but it's evident that Marvel intends to poke some fun at itself.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is all in on meta-humor. Will this approach succeed without the star power of its previous leads? Only time will tell.
