{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters close call with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track right in his path
The concerning event took place on the third rotation when marshals were observed on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit track officials can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, track officials were informed and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send marshals were canceled and a caution signal was shown in that area"
"We are still investigating what occurred after that point"
