Ex- FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the plea representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for several causes including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was formally accused shortly after Donald Trump urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the judge they planned to file multiple legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a court case, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to handle the case.

Mr Comey's legal matter was first handled by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his probe into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in positive mood as he walked into the court on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.

After listening to the judge read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he stated to the proceedings.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was fired about several months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

While in office, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to criticism from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors assert James Comey lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he provided false information to the upper house by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the agency to disclose to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording the former director shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"My family and I have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against Mr Comey emerged after Donald Trump shared on digital channels demanding his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute James Comey and others.
